One cold morning in March 1941, the 152 Maine National Guard field artillary band stopped at the old post office building while marching from the Bangor Armory to Union Station (demolished in the 1960's during urban renewal), where a train would take them to Florida in preparation for war. My father, Alden Goode now deceased, is the first young man in the second row directly behind the drums. He is holding his clarinet. He also played the alto sax. As it turned out Dad never went to the front. I was so proud of him and his contribution to his country. He was a self-taught musician and after the war his musical ability subsidized the family income by playing in dance bands into the 1980's. It would be nice to hear from anyone of the "Greatest Generation" or the big band era.
