Each of the four seasons of New England presents its own unique changes in the flora, the fauna, the waters, and the atmospheric conditions. Yet, no season conjures up more dread; or, on the other hand, more fun than that of winter. Beech Hill Pond in Otis, Maine has few year round residents. It takes a special kind of person to to live on a frozen lake in the woods of Maine. But, there are great rewards in the beauty of the land, the adventures experienced, the sense of independence from survival and the appreciation of life.
My brother, my niece, and a friend took a ride to our camp during the past holiday season. Their mission was to check on the snow-covered roof and to enjoy what nature had brought from the recent snowfall. While my brother climbed upon the roof to clear it of snow, Abby and Bob explored the area.

This is the lake that my brother and his friends snowmobiled on while as teenagers and after riding would go inside to sit by the old black woodstove (with hot toddy in hands) to warm their cold toes, fingers and noses.

Can you find the turkeys? I guess they escaped Thanksgiving this year!
Abby is wondering if she could be having more fun than this. Upon their return to the city, the three adventurers were happy that the camp was still in tact.
