I believe this is a Cooper's Hawk that I shot (a picture that is) from inside my kitchen looking out the patio door. Because it was only about 8-10 feet away I couldn't exit without causing it to flee.
I have a feeder that attracts a lot of birds including blue (scrub) jays that toss out everything but what they want and this in turn attracts doves and other birds to the ground area around the feeder.
It also attracts the attention of the occassional bird of prey which causes quite a ruckus. I have never seen a capture but one day I heard a thud, walked out the door and was immersed in a shower of feathers. The hawk and its prey must have just moved out of sight.
