Place and Time

The communist takeover of mainland China in 1949 led to a population boom in Hong Kong in the 1950's as thousands of refugees escaped to Hong Kong.  These refugees brought with them skills, capital, and cheap labor which transformed this small coastal seaport into a major industrial and manufacturing center.
