During the Korean War, John was stationed in Yokohama, Japan. Lillian again followed him, this time with their kids, J.C. and little JoAnn, in tow. The entire situation was surreal for Lillian, from mastering a foreign culture to learning to pronounce basic Japanese phrases. Her Midwestern vowels sometimes created interesting results. She was particularly amused to be taught the Japanese greeting, “Ohayo,” or “Good morning,” which is pronounced almost exactly like “Ohio.” She found it funny that she’d traveled around the world only to tell everyone she met exactly where she was from.
