I used to ice skate on Como Lake as a boy in the 1950's and I remember skating up and down the two branches of Cayuga Creek that fed the lake. We played pick-up hockey games on one corner of the Lake. Sometimes we just skated and chased each other around. Boys snatching girls hats (and vice versa) was a favorite activity. The skating area was lit at night and the boathouse was kept open for hot chocolate, etc.
I recall the plows that cleared the frequent snow accumulations and how we were mostly dependent on mother nature to provide good ice. Sometimes it was barely skate-able. Other times it was as if a zamboni had resurfaced it.
How great to have that available as a child growing up in Lancaster. They have long since disallowed all of this - I suppose a sign of the times: fear of litigation and too many rules and regulations. Does anyone have any pictures or rememberances of this magical place and time?
